Fitwel Certification

It is no surprise that building operators and investors are taking an increasingly proactive approach to healthy buildings and worker safety given the events of the past year. With COVID in play building engineers are employing new strategies to ensure that those not working from home have clean air and healthy buildings to work in.

A great way to gain recognition for these improvements is the Fitwel program. Much like LEED, Fitwel allows building teams to achieve recognition for high performing, well-maintained buildings. Unlike LEED, Fitwel prioritizes wellness. By focusing on a number of health and mental wellness criteria listed on Fitwel score cards the program grades applicants on how well their buildings cater to their occupants physical and psychological well being.

Americans spend on average 90% of their day indoors so a health building can make a huge difference for its occupants. Fitwel buildings can improve work life in a number of ways including:
  1. Reducing morbidity and absenteeism.

  2. Instilling feelings of well-being.

  3. Enhancing access to healthy foods.

  4. Increasing physical activity.

  5. Promoting occupant safety.
MEP is pleased to announce the completion of our first Fitwel project. This past year we forayed into the world of Fitwel by assisting with a Ventilation and Filtration assessment at a Southern California office building. We also performed IEQ measurements to ensure that the air being delivered to tenant spaces was safe.

We look forward to interacting with this program and implementing what we learn in our own offices.
